Metropolitan WiFi:
A large part of the initiatives promoted by local administrations are aimed at simultaneously covering various objectives such as:
- Incorporating citizens into the “information society”
- Improving municipal services
- Increasing the value of use of the region
- Promoting business
- Facilitating electronic access of citizens to public services in compliance with the Law 11/2007
The deployment of a municipal Wi-Fi/WiMAX network which is operated in self-provision for the transmission of information from sensors and cameras and simultaneously to provide internet access to citizens and visitors as well as for residential access for citizens in those areas where there is no broad band alternative covers in a simultaneous way all the objectives.
The advantages are:
- Flexibility: They are flexible as they allow us to interconnect complicated locations and can be adjusted simply to any requirements imposed.
- o Scalability: This quality refers to the possibility of quickly adapting and widening the aspects of the network, which relate to coverage and band width.
- Speed of deployment: The deployment of a wireless network normally tends to be quite quick, especially if there is already equipment or infrastructure in place (communication towers, lampposts, deposits of water located at high altitudes) that can be used to carry out the installation.
- Reduced costs: It depends upon each case, but it is generally less expensive to deploy a wireless network than a cable network, especially if the conditions mentioned in the paragraph above exist such that there is an infrastructure already in place which can be taken advantage of.
